60% of Companies Opt for Digital Twins to Achieve Sustainability Goals
The Capgemini Research Institute has revealed that 60 percent of companies across major sectors are choosing to adopt digital twins to enhance their operational performance, as well as to align with their sustainability agenda. By simulating a physical world, digital twins help in reducing carbon emissions and transportation impact. According to the report titled “Digital Twins: Bringing Intelligence to the Real World,” the utilization of this emerging technology is expected to grow by 36 percent over the next five years, primarily in industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, utilities, and others.
Real World Examples of Digital Twins
As per the report’s findings, 79 percent of surveyed companies have indicated that implementing digital twins has also led to cost savings, 77 percent recognize technological advancement, and 57 percent consider it a crucial factor in enhancing their sustainability efforts. Moreover, on average, one-third of the surveyed organizations have already implemented digital twins at scale to understand and predict their energy consumption and emissions. Consumer products, energy, and utilities industries lead in this use case, with 52 and 50 percent respectively, leveraging virtual replicas to promote sustainable operations.
To compile this report, Capgemini collected insights from a thousand organizations spanning various sectors, including infrastructure owners and operators. 80 percent of the surveyed companies currently have an active digital twin program, while the rest are planning to initiate their development. Digital twins are computational systems programmed to mimic the inputs and outputs of a physical process, enabling proactive identification of issues and risks within systems.
